Construction status in December 2016

The Willehadi Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Garbsen .

First church building

The first church building, a brick building, was inaugurated on January 26, 1969. On the night of July 30, 2013, the church was destroyed by arson.

Second church building

Work on the new building of the church began in September 2015. The new church building should be designed a little smaller and lighter than the first building. The church council and architect Gerd Lauterbach had also set themselves the goal of integrating as many preserved parts of the old church as possible into the new building. Completion was initially planned for summer 2016; the first service took place on February 25, 2017. A new parish hall had already been opened in December 2013, construction of which had already begun before the fire. The new building was made possible by numerous donors and sponsors, including the gospel choir "canto vivo", which gave several benefit concerts for this purpose.

Rescued art objects

In the old Willehadikirche there were two artistically outstanding bronze objects, the two-winged portal by the sculptor Prof. Karl Henning Seemann and the crucifix by the sculptor Prof. Hubertus von Pilgrim. The popular globe chandelier for devotional candles was severely deformed in the fire by falling beams. As part of a fundraising campaign, it was able to be cleaned, but it is given the deformed shape as a symbol of the “tortured earth” and has found its place in the prayer area in front of the colored window.

organ

An organ with two manuals and 19 registers was installed in the old Willlehadikirche in 2007. Since this was also destroyed in the fire, a new organ was also made by the organ builder Jörg Bente . This has now been set up in the church and was inaugurated in December 2018. It is a two-manual instrument with 22 registers, tremulant and coupling.
