Willi Eplinius (born March 12, 1884 in Werder ; † April 13, 1966 in Potsdam ) was a German film architect and theater painter .

Live and act

After his training as a painter, the son of a master potter had worked at the Museum of Applied Arts and had worked in this position for several decades at various theaters, where he made a name for himself as a backdrop painter. Sporadically he also hired himself out as a painter in cinema productions, for example in Reinhold Schünzel 's last German film before his emigration Land der Liebe (1937) and in the early war productions Frau nach Maß , Die Rothschilds , Die chaste Geliebte und Komödianten .

At the end of 1940, Eplinius began working as the second architect to work on setting up films. For Terra , he first implemented the drafts of his colleague Artur Günther , and later also those of other production designers. After the war, DEFA Eplinius took over in 1948 . His task for a few less important early productions remained that of a draftsman and backdrop painter, this time mainly under the guidance of Willy Schiller .

His DEFA career as an architect in the construction collective ended in 1952, and Willi Eplinius finally left the GDR state company six years later.
