William C. Davis (historian)

William Charles Davis (* 1946 in Independence (Missouri) ) is an American historian primarily of the American Civil War . He is a professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Center for Civil War Studies).

Davis grew up in Northern California and graduated from Sonoma State University with a master's degree in history in 1969. He was a long-time editor of the Civil War Times Illustrated and in the publishing business. In 1990 he started his own business as a writer and advisor on civil war issues. In 2000 he became a professor at Virginia Tech and lives in Blacksburg, Virginia .

He wrote over 50 books on the Civil War, as well as other topics in American history such as the history of Texas and American pioneering history, on Pierre Lafitte and Jean Lafitte .

He advised the History Channel for the Civil War Journal series from the 1990s.
