William Chalmers (born November 13, 1748 in Gothenburg ; † July 3, 1811 there ) was a Swedish merchant. He was director of the Swedish East India Company.

Life

Chalmers grew up in Gothenburg as the son of the Scottish merchant William Chalmers and his Swedish wife Inga Orre. He became director of the Swedish East India Company . As their representative and overseer, he lived from 1783 to 1793 in Canton and Macau , where many European nations established trading bases. In 1795 he founded Sweden's first mechanical cotton spinning mill in Lerum .

Chalmers had already become a member of the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg in 1774 . In 1811 he determined in a will part of his fortune to found an "industrial school". This became the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg in 1829 .
