The Borneo dwarf squirrel ( Glyphotes simus ) is an endemic squirrel to the island of Borneo . Here it inhabits the Malay island part at altitudes between 600 and 1700 m.

features

With a head body length of 12 cm and a tail length of 10 cm it is a small squirrel, but not nearly as tiny as the Borneo tiny squirrels . The coat color is gray-brown on the top and yellowish white on the underside.

distribution

The Borneo dwarf squirrel occurs in the north of the island of Borneo in the mountainous regions of Sabah and Sarawak in the Malay part of the island.

Systematics

The Borneo dwarf squirrel and also the genus Glyphotes first time in 1898 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas from Mount Kinabalu in the north of the island of Borneo described . To this day it is the only species of the genus monotypical . Some zoologists consider the Borneo dwarf squirrel to be a member of the genus of the common beautiful squirrel . However, in the eyes of others, the enlarged incisors justify the position in a separate genus Glyphotes . A second species of the genus, Glyphotes canalvus , found in older literature , is now considered a variant of the Borneo black banded squirrel ( Callosciurus orestes ).

No subspecies are distinguished within the species.
