William F. Buckley

William Francis Buckley (* the 30th May 1928 in Medford , Massachusetts , † 3. June 1985 in Beirut , Lebanon ) was an American CIA - Agent .

Life

William Francis Buckley joined the United States Army in 1947 after graduating from high school , for which he participated in the 1st US Cavalry Division in the Korean War . From 1955 to 1957 he worked for the CIA. After further stations in the military, he returned to the service of the CIA in the 1960s.

Buckley was kidnapped on March 16, 1984 by the Islamic group Holy Islamic War while he was working as the chief of station of the CIA in Beirut. He was the victim of torture and interrogation in 444 days of treatment at the hands of his captors. The person covering his torture was Imad Mughniyah , a former Hezbollah leader . Buckley may have been smuggled into Tehran via Damascus on board an Iranian plane . He died while being held hostage in Beirut after illness and abuse.

His remains were found on an access road to Beirut Airport in 1991 and transferred to the United States at the end of the year. Buckley was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
