William Forbes, 7th Laird of Tolquhon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Forbes (* unknown; † 1595 in Tolquhon), 7th Laird of Tolquhon , was a Scottish landowner and the builder of today's Tolquhon Castle .

Life

His father was Alexander Forbes, 6th Laird of Tolquhon , and his mother was Alison Anderson.

With the death of his father in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on September 10, 1547 he took the title 7th Laird of Tolquhon.

He was married twice. His son William (who later became the 8th Laird) came from his first marriage to Elizabeth Gordon . His second marriage to Janet Ogilvie had two sons; John and James (later 1st Laird Of Knappernay ).

Little can be learned about his life. The writings that have survived and were written by himself deal almost exclusively with the renovation of Tolquhon Castle. The only sources of his life can be found in the ecclesiastical records of the neighboring parish church of Tarves: his experience, but also his participation at the national level, was rather limited. However, he was a locally valued and generous man. He founded a hospital near the church and looked after it for years. His wife Elisabeth died in 1589; in their memory he had a monumental tomb erected in the church. In 1595 he died after almost 50 years of lairdship and was placed in the same grave. The grave itself is no longer there today due to a reconstruction of the church in the 18th century; the tomb has been preserved and is now in the church square of Tarves.

On the well-known genealogical websites The Peerage , Cracroft's Peerage or on The Descendants of Sir John Forbes, 1st Laird of Tolquhon , which have access to old, written sources, no further information or only contradicting information can be found. It can therefore be assumed that the Lairds of Tolquhon were not nobles, but bourgeois landowners.
