William McKenzie, Baron McKenzie of Luton

William David "Bill" McKenzie, Baron McKenzie of Luton (born July 24, 1946 ) is a British Labor politician and life peer .

He was until 2010 Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Ministry of Work and Pensions ( Department for Work and Pensions ) and the Ministry of Municipalities and local politics ( Department for Communities and Local Government ). He was also a partner in the accounting firm Price Waterhouse .

Youth and early career

He was born in 1946 to Donald McKenzie and his wife Elsie May geb. Doust. He studied from 1964 to 1967 at the University of Bristol , where he received a bachelor's degree in economics and accounting . He became an accountant at Martin Rata and Partners . He moved to Price Waterhouse in 1973 , where he worked in many offices. In 1980 he became a partner. In 1992 he went to Hong Kong for Price Waterhouse , where he was first a consultant and then a partner again. From 1996 to 1998 he was responsible for the Vietnam business.

Previously a political career

McKenzie ran twice, in 1987 and 1992, for the parliamentary seat of the Luton South constituency . However, it was unsuccessful both times.

From 1976 to 1992 he sat in the Luton District Assembly and again from 1999 to 2005. Until May 2003 he was the council chairman. During his time as councilor, he dealt mainly with finances. During this time he was a member of the GMB union . As Lord McKenzie, he is still a member of the GMB. He was also on the board of directors of London-Luton Airport .

Later political career

McKenzie was promoted to Life Peer on June 18, 2004 as Baron McKenzie of Luton , of Luton in the County of Bedfordshire, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since. He was spokesman for the Treasury in the House of Lords and Whip of the Department of Trade and Industry. Prior to being awarded the Peer Rating, he was advisor to the Labor Party's shadow finance ministerial team and a member of the Fabian Society Taxation Review Committee. He was appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions in January 2007 . His areas of responsibility included health and occupational safety. In June 2009 he resigned and became Minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government

After the 2010 general election , he became the opposition spokesman for work and pensions as well as for communities and local politics

McKenzie married Diana Joyce Angliss in 1972.
