William Morton Dey
William Morton Dey (born June 23, 1880 in Norfolk (Virginia) , † 1961 ) was an American Romanist .
life and work
Dey studied at the University of Virginia and received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1906 with the work The history of the prefix por- in Old French (published ud T. The Latin prefix "pro" in French, in: Studies in Philology 12, 1915, No. 4). From 1909 to 1949 he was (the first) Professor of Romance Philology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , most recently as Kenan Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures.
Dey was a Knight of the Legion of Honor (1949). In Chapel Hill, Dey Hall is named after him.
