William Phillips (geologist)
William Phillips (born May 10, 1775 in London , † April 2, 1828 there ) was a British geologist and mineralogist.
Phillips was a Quaker and the son of the printer and bookseller James Phillips. His younger brother Richard Phillips later became a chemist. With William Allen , Luke Howard , William Haseldine Pepys , his brother Richard Phillips and others, he founded the Askesian Society in 1796 , which existed until 1807. In 1807 he was a founding member of the Geological Society of London .
He wrote influential textbooks on geology and mineralogy in his day. The mineral phillipsite is named in his honor.
