WS Bristowe

William Syer Bristowe , mostly quoted WS Bristowe , (born September 11, 1901 , † January 8, 1979 ) was a British arachnologist .

Bristowe attended Wellington College and studied at Cambridge University. In 1921 he was on an expedition from Cambridge University to Jan Mayen (under James Mann Wordie) and in 1923 to Brazil. From 1925 he was in the chemical company Brunner Mond, which merged with ICI in 1926 . In 1936 he became head of the Far East branch and director of local sub-companies. 1948 to 1962 he was head of the Central Staff Department.

He is known as an expert on spiders, which he collected worldwide (also in the Arctic).

He also dealt with the story of Anna Leonowens when he was researching her son Louis Leonowens in Thailand , found large parts of her report as governess at the court of Siam (dramatized in the musical The King and I ) fictional and published a book about it.
