William Thomas (Knight)

Sir William Thomas (also William ap Thomas ) († between January 26, 1542 and March 15, 1542) was a Welsh knight.

William ap Thomas was born into an ancient Welsh family who traced their ancestry back to the 13th century. He was a son of Thomas ap Rhydderch and his wife Maud. In 1509 he became Constable of the Royal Carmarthen Castle and sheriff of the Royal Dominions of Carmarthen and Cardigan . In addition, he was administrator of Cantref Mawr and other properties. In 1521 he also became a constable of Aberystwyth Castle . For his services he was appointed Knight Bachelor beaten . Under the Incorporation of Wales Acts , he served as the second sheriff of the newly formed Carmarthenshire county from 1541 until shortly before his death.

William ap Thomas Anglicized his Welsh name to William Thomas. He married Jane Herbert, daughter of the influential Sir William Herbert of Coldbrook , Monmouthshire . With her he had several children, of which his eldest surviving son, Rhys, became his heir. He was buried in the Llangathen Church, which he expanded, near his Aberglasney manor .
