William W. Tunnicliffe

William W. Tunnicliffe (born April 22, 1922 in Washington, DC , † September 12, 1996 in Winchester , Massachusetts ) was an American computer scientist and entrepreneur.

William W. Tunnicliffe studied at Worcester Polytechnic Institute until 1943 and graduated from Harvard University with a degree in engineering and applied physics in 1951 . He was the first to suggest the idea of markup language at a 1967 conference. His idea was to separate format definitions and content in electronic documents, which he called "generic coding".
