William Yarrell

William Yarrell (born June 3, 1784 in London , † September 1, 1856 in Great Yarmouth ) was an English bookseller and naturalist.

biography

Yarrell was born the son of a newspaper seller in central London. He enjoyed a reputation for being the best angler in London before he became a renowned naturalist. In 1825 he was elected to the Linnaeus Society and immediately became its treasurer. He was also one of the founding members of the Zoological Society of London in 1826 . His main ornithological merit was the first description of the dwarf swan in 1830. He was also very well known as the author of two books The History of British Fishes (1836) and The History of British Birds (1843). He has also contributed to the journal Transactions of the Linnean Society of London .

Several animal species are named after William Yarrell, including the Chilean Woodstar (a hummingbird) ( Eulidia yarrellii ), the yellow-faced siskin ( Carduelis yarrellii ), the bush carrier ( Chirolophis ascanii ) (species of fish in English Yarrell's blenny is) and the Pied ( Motacilla alba yarrellii ).
