from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willibald Popp (* 1653 in Rain am Lech ; † 1735 in Augsburg ) was a German imperial abbot .

life and work

The imperial abbot Willibald Popp was abbot of the Augsburg Benedictine monastery of Sankt Ulrich und Afra from 1694 to 1735 , which was secularized in 1802. During his tenure, Popp promoted science as well as historiography and provided funds for the renovation of rectories, administrative offices and church buildings.

His outstanding projects include the expansion and redesign of the parish church of St. Georg in the then still independent town of Haunstetten (now an Augsburg district, see Augsburg-Haunstetten ).

Popp had a jumping white gray horse in his coat of arms in the upper left and lower right fields. This gray horse was later incorporated into the Haunstetter city coat of arms and is intended to remind of the many centuries of solidarity with the Abbey of Sankt Ulrich and Afra.
