Willie W. Herenton (born April 23, 1940 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American politician . He was Mayor of Memphis from 1992 to 2009 .

biography

Herenton is a graduate of Le Moyne-Owen College , Memphis. He then attended the University of Memphis . From 1979 to 1992 he was the director of the Memphis City Schools . He is the father of four children, the youngest was born in 2004.

On October 3, 1991, he was elected the first African-American Mayor of Memphis. In the election campaign for his first term, he beat incumbent Dick Hackett . Herenton was elected for the fifth time in October 2007, but shortly afterwards he held out the prospect of a possible resignation. He finally resigned from the office on July 30, 2009, followed by Myron Lowery on an interim basis until October .

In early 2010, Willie Herenton tried to run in that year's congressional elections , but was clearly defeated by Steve Cohen in the Democratic Party's primaries .
