Willy Berger (born July 24, 1888 in Sebnitz ; † May 10, 1976 in Bad Schandau ) was a German museologist and local researcher .

Life

Born in Sebnitz, he moved with his parents to Schandau as early as 1894, where he attended school and successfully completed an apprenticeship as a clerk at the municipal council from 1903 to 1906. He was initially a travel agent, in 1908 municipal assistant and after the First World War an employee of the Bad Schandau City Council. For a long time he was head of the Stadtsparkasse Bad Schandau.

From 1938 onwards he began to concentrate on collecting prehistoric objects after he came across the old Schomburg while building his house . In this context, he came up with the idea of founding a local museum in Bad Schandau. This was opened on August 29, 1940 under his direction in the building Badallee 10/11. After the museum was closed due to the war and the end of World War II, Willy Berger took over the management of the museum again, which he held in his hands when he turned 75 in 1963. Under his direction it became one of the most visited museums in Saxon Switzerland. In 1957, together with Gerhard Walter, he published a 24-page guide to the Bad Schandau local history museum with eleven illustrations.

In Bad Schandau, Willy Berger founded a local group of the Kulturbund of the GDR , which he also headed for several years. He was also one of the co-founders of the Saxon Switzerland working group . In 1976 he died at the age of 88.
