The Willys Interlagos was a sports car that Willys-Overland do Brazil manufactured under license in São Paulo (Brazil). It was the first sports car to be built in Brazil. The vehicles are essentially identical to their French sister models Alpine A108 , as they were released by the sports car manufacturer Alpine in 1960. The design of the vehicles comes from Phillipe Charles. 3 versions were replicated in Brazil: Willys Interlagos Berlineta, Willys Interlagos Cupê, Willys Interlagos Conversível. The vehicles have the “Interlagos” logo on the front and the “Willys” logo on the rear. The model name is an allusion to the Interlagos race track and should underline the sportiness of the model.

Jean Rédélé , the founder and owner of the Alpine sports car brand at the time, signed contracts with various other automobile manufacturers who then produced his vehicles under license. The collaboration with Willys-Overland do Brazil was presented to the public at the “Salão de São Paulo” in 1961. A Willys Interlagos Berlineta was exhibited at the Brazilian Motor Show. After the start of production in São Paulo, 4 and later 8 vehicles were initially produced per day. 822 vehicles had been built by the end of production in 1966.

The Willys Interlagos was available with different 4-cylinder engines: with 845 cm³, 904 cm³ and 998 cm³. The most powerful version (998 cm³) developed 71 hp and reached a top speed of 160 km / h. The Willys Interlagos is a rear-engined vehicle with a GRP body. This material saved weight, which was especially important for motorsport.

Models

Willys Interlagos Berlineta

The Willys Interlagos Berlineta is the sister model of the Alpine A108 Berlinette and was used in motorsport in Brazil. Alpine founder Jean Rédélé developed not only road vehicles but also vehicles that were mainly designed for motorsport. The Willys Interlagos Berlineta was developed as a rally sports car. Drivers like Bird Clemente or the young Carlos Pace were behind the wheel of the racing version of the Willys Interlagos Berlineta. Bird Clemente competed in competitions such as the GP Guanabara, in Montevideo and on the racetrack of the namesake Interlagos.

Willys Interlagos Cupê

The Willys Interlagos Cupê is a coupé and corresponds to the sister model Alpine A108 Coupe Sport from 1960. The front is designed similar to that of the Willys Interlagos Berlineta. However, the roof and rear end are shaped differently.

Willys Interlagos Conversível

The Willys Interlagos Conversível is the convertible version of the Willys Interlagos. The car is the sister model of the Alpine A108 Cabriolet Sport from 1960. The car has a fabric roof that can be folded down.
