Fair at the Windhoek Show

The Windhoek Show , with its full name Windhoek Industrial and Agricultural Show (WIAS) , is a consumer fair in the Namibian capital Windhoek . It is by far the largest and most traditional trade fair in the country.

The show has been organized since 1899, annually since 1966 and under the umbrella of the Windhoek Show Society since 1990 . It takes place annually over a week between the end of September and the beginning of October at the Windhoek Show Grounds . Today the fair is considered a consumer fair, with the focus still on agriculture and industry. There is also a small fair here . There was a large firework display until 2008, but it was then banned and took place again for the first time in 2013.

history

The history of the Windhoek Show began in 1899 when 22 exhibitors from Klein Windhoek gathered for an agricultural fair. In 1902 the 2nd Windhoek Agricultural Show took place, which enjoyed increasing popularity. Due to the First World War and financial problems, the third fair was not held until 1930. In 1934 construction began on the exhibition grounds. However, it was not until 1954 that the fair was held again. Since then, the fair has been held on the site, and even annually since 1966. This year, more than 27,000 visitors have already been counted at the trade fair, which is now geared towards industry and agriculture.
