The Bertha windmill in Süddorf.

The Bertha windmill is located in Süddorf on the North Sea island of Amrum , about 800 meters from the Amrum windmill . She is a small Dutchman with a no longer existing codend and sail wings. Heinrich Andresen had the building erected in 1893. A post mill had stood in its place since 1882 . The Bertha windmill is now used for residential purposes. The mill technology is no longer available.

history

Volkert Martin Quedens , who later founded the Wittdün seaside resort on Amrum , had the mill set up on the Bronze Age burial mound Redenhuug in 1882 at Uasterstigh 34. The building, erected in 1775, previously stood in Munkmarsch on Sylt , where it was just being demolished when the skipper Quedens drove by. He then headed for the island, bought the demolition material and then transported it to his home island, where he had the mill rebuilt. A little later he sold the mill to Heinrich Andresen, the son of a Föhr farmer. Up until now he had farmed Quedens' land and was not a trained miller , but soon acquired the necessary skills. He discovered that the mill was not efficient enough. Therefore, in 1893, he had it replaced by today's Dutch mill. This is said to have originally been built on the mainland by a mill builder named Tietje (-ns). While working on the basement, the miller at that time came across a large stone setting in the center of which was a tree coffin with the skeleton of a male corpse with a bronze sword as a grave object.

The mill was in operation until 1942. It then fell into disrepair until architects from Hamburg bought the building in 1952. These had the exterior restored and the interior redesigned for residential purposes.
