Detail of the Charterhouse

The Chartreuse de Portes ( Cartusia Beatae Mariae Portarum ; Charterhouse of Portes ) is a monastery of the contemplative Carthusian order in the commune of Bénonces in the Ain department in France. It is located at an altitude of 1000 meters and is also called the Charterhouse of the Saints ( Chartreuse des Saints ) because several monks who were later canonized came from it. The complex has been registered as a Monument historique since 1947 .

history

The Charterhouse is the third oldest in the order and the second oldest in France. It was founded in 1115 by two monks who came from the Benedictine Notre-Dame Abbey in Ambronay and were looking for solitude. The charterhouse church was consecrated in 1125. The existing church was built in 1660.

During the French Revolution , the Charterhouse was converted into an estate, but it did not prosper. The Carthusian Order bought the site back in 1855 and repaired it. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Carthusians left the monastery due to secular legislation, but acquired it again in 1951 and moved into the twelve cell buildings.

Buildings and plant

The cells of the monastery are arranged around the cloister that encloses the cemetery. The Correrie der Konversen is about two kilometers below the monastery of the monks. According to their vocation to the lonely life that allow exam regulations of the Carthusians no access to the public. The Charterhouse cannot be visited.
