The Carthusian monastery Mosteiro Nossa Senhora Medianeira is a monastery of the contemplative Carthusian order in Ivorá in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil .

history

The Charterhouse was established in 1984 as the first Carthusian monastery in Latin America .

The monastery was founded in Ivorá on the initiative of the Bishop of Santa Maria , José Ivo Lorscheiter , then President of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference , and by resolution of the General Chapter in 1983. The first monks settled there on November 21, 1984. Construction of the monastery complex began on February 1, 1986. The end of construction work was celebrated on August 20, 2000.

Nossa Senhora Medianeira has been the only Carthusian monastery in the Portuguese-speaking area since the abolition of the Charterhouse of Santa María de Scala Coeli in 2011 .
