The Cartoixa de Santa María de Montalegre ( Spanish : Cartuja de Santa María de Montealegre ; Carthusian Monastery of Montalegre ) is a monastery of the Contemplative Carthusian Order near the city of Tiana in the province of Barcelona , Autonomous Community of Catalonia , in Spain . It is the only existing Charterhouse in Catalonia.

history

Entrance area

The origin of the Charterhouse goes back to a small Augustinian nunnery from 1247, which was moved to Barcelona in 1362. After several changes of ownership, the complex was acquired in 1415 by the prior of the Vallparadís Charterhouse. In the same year, construction of the Carthusian monastery began near the old convent. Construction work was completed in 1463.

From 1808 to 1814 and from 1820 to 1824 the community had to leave the monastery. With the dismortment in Spain , the Charterhouse fell into disuse in 1835. The Charterhouse subsequently served as a barracks and hospital. Efforts around 1867 to re-establish the Charterhouse failed. It was not until 1901 that a new monastic community was formed by monks from France.

In the Spanish Civil War this was dispersed again; some relatives were killed. A hospital was set up again in the monastery. After the victory of the Francoist movement, the convention returned. In 1940 a seminar was set up in the old Conreria building, which was closed in 1998 for economic reasons.
