General view of the Charterhouse

The Chartreuse de Séligniac is a monastery of the contemplative Carthusian order in Simandre-sur-Suran in the Ain department in France. It is now inhabited by a few lay brothers associated with the order .

history

The Charterhouse was built in 1202 on a site that Hugo von Coligny had donated before he set out for the Fourth Crusade , and was abolished in the French Revolution in 1792. Reformation and the wars of the 17th century led to decline. The Charterhouse flourished again in the 18th century and was largely rebuilt.

In 1810 the choir stalls were transferred to the church in Treffort (now part of the Treffort-Cuisiat community ). The charterhouse church was restored in 1866. In 1869 the complex was taken over again by the Carthusians. In the course of secular legislation, they left the Charterhouse again in 1901 and took refuge in Saxon in Valais in Switzerland , later in the Charterhouse La Valsainte and in St. Hugh's Charterhouse in England . The buildings were sold to a wine merchant who set up a hotel there, which was closed again in 1912. In 1928 the Carthusian monks settled again in Sélignac, which had since been acquired by a benefactress. After 1951 the Charterhouse took part in the re-establishment of the Chartreuse de Portes .

Todays use

In 2001 the General Chapter decided to give up the monastic settlement and to replace it with a community of lay people who were to lead a life in solitude and based on the example of the founder of the order, Bruno of Cologne, and the monastic life of the Carthusians. With the Maison Saint Bruno, the Chartreuse de Sélignac offers the only opportunity for a retreat in a Carthusian branch. Other Carthusian monasteries only allow applicants to join the order. The idea of such a house is an absolute novelty in the 900-year history of the Carthusian Order.
