The Carthusian monastery of Farneta (" Certosa dello Spirito Santo ") is a Carthusian monastery in the municipality of Lucca near the district of Maggiano, province of Lucca , Tuscany region in Italy .

The monastery is one of three existing Carthusian monasteries in Italy. Another brother monastery, the Santo Stefano del Bosco monastery , is located in Serra San Bruno in Calabria . A charterhouse, the Certosa della Trinità near Dego in the Liguria region , is inhabited by nuns .

history

The monastery, founded in 1338, was rebuilt and enlarged several times between the 17th century and the early 20th century. Since it was founded, the size of the monastery complex has more than doubled. The Carthusian monastery was last expanded in the early 20th century when the brothers of the Grande Chartreuse mother monastery, expelled from France in 1903 , were accepted. The Catalan Archbishop and Cardinal Francisco de Asís Vidal y Barraquer lived here in exile from 1936 to 1943 .

Second World War

During a raid on September 2, 1944, under the command of SS officer Hermann Langer , numerous refugees were discovered, including some Jews who had been hidden in the monastery by monks . Langer then ordered the execution of 60 people. The city was liberated by the Allies shortly afterwards . Langer was only tried in La Spezia in 2004 for the massacre, after files believed to be lost were found in 1994 in the so-called cabinet of shame in Palazzo Cesi , the seat of the General Military Prosecutor's Office in Rome .

Buildings

The church, consecrated in 1358 , took on its present form after renovations in the late 17th century. Frescoes by Stefano Cassiani, called " il Certosino " ("the Carthusian"), extend on all the inner walls of the church building. A marble shrine surrounds the fresco " La Discesa Spirito Santo " ( "outpouring of the Holy Spirit" ).

Next to the church are the small cloister and the chapter house , in which a fresco from the 17th century with the Annunciation scene has been preserved.

The monks' cells , individual houses separated from one another, are arranged around the large cloister. According to their vocation to the lonely life that allow exam regulations of the Carthusians no access to the public. The Charterhouse cannot be visited.
