The Cartuja de San José ( Carthusian monastery of St. Joseph ) is a monastery of the Contemplative Carthusian Order near the city of Deán Funes in the province of Cordoba in Argentina . The Charterhouse is the third such monastery in the American subcontinent and the most recent establishment in Latin America .
history
The idea of founding a Charterhouse in Argentina arose in 1995 after postulants from Argentina had to go to Europe. In 1997 the project was approved by the General Chapter of the Order and has since been promoted by the Argentine Bishops' Conference . In the same year, three Carthusian monks from Argentina, Spain and Germany looked for a suitable place and found it in Campo de la Trinidad around ten kilometers from Deán Fuentes.
Buildings and plant
The complex was planned by the architect Federico Shanahan , who was based on existing Carthusian monasteries in Europe. In October 1998 part of the complex was moved into. The inauguration of the completed Charterhouse took place on March 19, 2004 (St. Joseph's Day). This includes u. a. 22 monk cells, a church, several chapels, a refectory , the chapter house and a guest house for relatives.
