August 1, 1996
Two Americans and two Brazilians qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Australia, Italy, Zambia and Sweden.
The favorite was Sambier Samuel Matete, last year runner-up behind the American Derrick Adkins. In the Olympic year, Matete had run the best times before the Atlanta Games and in four out of five duels he had finished ahead of Adkins. Contenders for the places behind these two clear favorites were the Russian World Cup fourth Ruslan Maschtschenko and the Swedish Vice European Champion Sven Nylander, who came fifth in the 1995 World Cup . Mashchenko was already eliminated in the run-up.
Adkins led the field on the seventh hurdle. At the start of the home stretch, the American was further ahead, but his lead was narrow. His compatriot Calvin Davis followed, followed by the Swede Sven Nylander and the Brazilian Eronilde de Araújo. Little changed over the next fifty meters, but then Derrick Adkins, with the best stamina, clearly set himself apart from his opponents and became Olympic champion. De Araújo meanwhile ran out of strength and fell back to last place. From behind, Matete fought his way forward again and with the last steps even caught Davis, who was slacking off. As in the World Championships in 1993 and 1995 , Samuel Matete won the silver medal. Calvin Davis finished third in front of Sven Nylander - the two separated two hundredths of a second - and the Australian Rohan Robinson. The Italian Fabrizio Mori took sixth place in front of Éverson Teixeira from Brazil.
In the 21st Olympic final, Derrick Adkins ran the 400 meter hurdles for the 16th US victory .
Samuel Matete won the first Olympic medal in athletics for Zambia.
