Windows Live is the former common brand name for a number of free services and software products from Microsoft under a proprietary license. Most of these services are client-side binary applications that are currently grouped under the name Windows Essentials . The Windows Live brand was born when Microsoft decided to remove all personal services from the MSN brand . In 2012 live.com was the 9th most visited website on the Internet.

Services offered

The Windows Live services were Windows Live Hotmail (formerly MSN Hotmail ), Windows Live SkyDrive (developed from Windows Live Folders and Office Live Workspace ), Windows Live Contacts and Windows Live Calendar. In addition to SkyDrive, there was also the Windows Live Mesh synchronization program (formerly Windows Live Sync ). Windows Live Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger ) was used as a chat program . Windows Live also offered groups under the name Windows Live Groups (formerly MSN Groups ). The web search was Windows Live Search (formerly MSN Search ); the associated map service was called Windows Live Maps . The games network Games for Windows was intended to compete with Steam , although it did not succeed. All services are logged in using a Windows Live ID (formerly .net Passport ), which can also be used to log in to certain other websites; Examples are Ciao! and Golem.de . Most of the services could be used via the browser.

The end of the Windows Live brand

The first separation of services from the Windows Live brand began in 2009 with the relocation of search and map services to the new Bing brand . The former Windows Live Search and Windows Live Maps services have been modernized and some new functions have been added.

In July 2012, Microsoft introduced the Outlook.com email service , which supports the migration of Hotmail accounts. It is largely in the design of Windows 8 , which was initially only available for the e-mail service, OneDrive and the contact management; the calendar did not follow until 2013. Initially, the service was marked as beta; since 2013 it has completely replaced Hotmail, which was then discontinued. Windows Live Contacts has since been called Outlook.com Contacts, the Outlook.com Calendar. Windows Live Groups has been integrated into OneDrive.

As part of the market launch of Windows 8 in October 2012, Microsoft stated that it would not use the Windows Live brand name in the future; Windows Live SkyDrive was then renamed Microsoft SkyDrive (now OneDrive), Windows Live Messenger was then called Messenger, Windows Live ID was now called Microsoft Account, Windows Live Mesh kept its name, but was discontinued in February 2013. On April 30, 2013, the messenger was discontinued in favor of the in-house competitor Skype , the messenger contacts were automatically transferred to Skype.

In May 2014 the OneDrive Groups (previously Windows Live Groups ) were discontinued, existing groups are retained, but no new ones can be created.
