Windows Essentials (formerly Windows Live Essentials ) is the brand name of a collection of various online services and programs from the Microsoft software group .

The suite bundles e-mail , instant messaging , photo sharing , blog publishing and security services.

The programs are designed for optimal integration with one another and with Windows and other Microsoft web-based services such as OneDrive or Outlook.com .

On January 10, 2017, support from Microsoft was discontinued and the installation files were removed from the download center.

The programs can be installed on Windows 7 , Windows 8 , Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 10 . The current version from April 16, 2014 has the version number 16.4.3528. During the installation you can choose whether all or only individual program parts are to be installed.

history

The first version of the software suite was released in 2006 under the name Windows Live Dashboard . Shortly after its release, this suite was no longer available. The Windows Live Installer (2007) was Microsoft's second software collection. With Windows Live Essentials 2009 new programs have been added and existing extended. With the now no longer downloadable version Windows Live Essentials 2011 for Windows Vista, a. introduced the ribbon surface.

On August 7, 2012, Microsoft released Windows Essentials 2012 for Windows 7 and Windows 8. The Windows Live part of the name was removed from some programs, including the Bing Bar .

Windows 8 included a number of new apps that represent alternatives to some of the functionality of Windows Essentials . These applications are metro style apps and run in full screen mode. These include, for example, Mail, OneDrive and Photos.

With Windows 10 , these apps were fundamentally renewed. However, the apps under Windows 8 and Windows 10 offer a reduced / changed range of functions.
