Windows Live Mail , formerly Windows Live Mail Desktop , is a no longer maintained email client from Microsoft . The program is the successor to Outlook Express for Windows XP and Windows Mail for Windows Vista .

Windows Live Mail was developed by the same team that developed Outlook Express and, from it, Windows Mail. The first released version was published in November 2007 and had the version number 12. Microsoft discontinued support for Windows Live Mail on January 10, 2017 and no longer offers it for download.

The program could be installed using the installer of the Windows Essentials product line .

Unlike Outlook Express and Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail no longer supports a scripting language in templates. A calendar is integrated for this.

Functions

Windows Live Mail includes many other features from Windows Mail and the following new features:

  • Windows Live Hotmail can be integrated
  • Connection to Microsoft OneDrive
  • The client was adapted to the appearance of Windows Live
  • Supports RSS - web feeds (requires Internet Explorer version 7 or higher)
  • Multi-line message lists like in Outlook
  • Emoticons in emails and other functions
  • Spell check
  • A separate folder structure for each e-mail account
  • Changed sending of image files: With a so-called photo email, the recipient of the email can be provided with a large number of photos without the emails being sent becoming very large. For this purpose, small preview images are automatically generated and inserted into the e-mail, and at the same time a larger version of each image is uploaded to a Microsoft server for 30 days. The preview images in the e-mail are linked so that the recipient of the photo e-mail can view and download individual or all photos in a larger version. However, a Windows Live account is required for this. If photos are to be sent as reduced copies directly in the e-mail attachment, the Photo E-Mail button must be expanded with ▼ in the Windows Photo Gallery program and Send photos as attachment must be selected.
  • Data transfer u. a. from Outlook-Express (mail inventory, address book, account and login information), so that a loss-free migration is possible.
  • The Windows contacts can be imported into Live Mail 2012, Live Mail 2011 could still use the Windows contacts directly (without import).
  • Support of POP3 and POP3 over SSL as well as IMAP .
