The Windows Management Framework ( WMF ) from Microsoft is a uniform management interface for Windows operating systems. The Windows Management Framework was created as a separate package to create compatibility in the management of different Windows versions.

The Windows Management Framework comprises the following components:

  • Windows PowerShell
  • Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE)
  • Windows Remote Management (WinRM), Microsoft's implementation of the WS-Management standard
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
  • Windows PowerShell Web Services ( OData - IIS Extension Management ) (from version 3.0)
  • CIM provider for server managers (from version 3.0)
  • Windows PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC) (from version 4.0)
  • Logging of the software inventory (Software Inventory Logging, SIL) (from version 5.0)

The Windows Management Framework was first published in 2009 as version 2.0, including PowerShell 2.0. PowerShell 1.0 was released without the Windows Management Framework.
