Windows Mixed Reality

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) is a platform developed by Microsoft for virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications. WMR was released in 2015 under the name Windows Holographic , which was initially only intended to operate the Microsoft HoloLens . In 2016, Microsoft announced that it would open the platform to third parties. The name changed to the current name and in 2017 WMR became part of Windows 10 . Since then, VR headsets based on this platform have also appeared.

Compatible AR hardware (Microsoft HoloLens & HoloLens 2)

In parallel to the platform , Microsoft presented data glasses called HoloLens , which work with Windows Holographic . The glasses have a high-resolution head-mounted display , which can project three-dimensional objects into the environment. Among other things, it has voice, gesture and gaze control . With HoloStudio, an application for creating 3D models , and HoloBuilder, a Minecraft adaptation for the HoloLens, applications based on Windows Holographic have already been presented.

Compatible VR hardware

The first VR glasses for this platform appeared in October 2017 :

  • Acer Windows Mixed Reality HMD , modified slightly later than Acer OJO 500 called
  • Dell Visor
  • HP Windows Mixed Reality HMD
  • Lenovo Explorer and the identical Medion Erazer X1000

A short time later, two other manufacturers introduced WMR headsets:

  • Samsung HMD Odyssey (November 2017), and successor Samsung HMD Odyssey + (October 2018)
  • Asus Windows Mixed Reality HMD (2018)

Further headsets appeared since 2019:

  • HP Reverb (May 2019)
  • HP Reverb G2 (announced May 2020)

All headsets mentioned use an inside-out tracking system specified by Microsoft with 6 Degrees of Freedom ("6DoF"), i.e. complete spatial movement tracking. This is implemented by 2 built-in cameras, with the HP Reverb G2 being the first VR glasses on this platform to use a further developed 4-camera system.
