Wings is a computer game from the Flight Simulator genre by Cinemaware . In 1990 for the Amiga - home computers appeared in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance . The player takes on the role of an Allied pilot in the First World War .

Started in 1916 as a rookie , he continued his military career until the end of the war in 1918 with the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force. The silent film Wings from 1927 inspired the creators of the game - hence the silent film-like text overlay before and after the missions. The individual missions are - as can often be seen in newer action games with a war background - linked by a diary. The objectives of the missions are cleverly linked to historical events, such as the shooting down of famous flying aces like Manfred von Richthofen .

What was special about this game, in addition to its atmospheric density, was the combination of different action elements. In addition to classic 3D aerial battles in flight simulator style, ground fire or bombing missions could also be completed from a 2D perspective. After the mission, the operation was rated either as a success or a failure. A failure, i.e. a mission in which targets were missed or the wrong targets were hit, had a negative effect on the military career.

The SNES console game Wings 2 only has to do with the subject matter of the original Wings.

After an unsuccessful remake attempt on the part of Cinemawares, a new attempt was made in November 2013 to finance Wings using Kickstarter. The successful crowdfunding ran until December 10, 2013, the game was released for supporters on October 10, 2014 and was released on October 17, 2014.
