Winileod

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Winileod is an Old High German , folk song. The term is composed of wini (friend, lover) and liod (song).

In contrast to the Latin , sacred chants, a winileod - like the folk song later - was sung by the common people at festive parades, gatherings and feasts. It was probably not all about love songs, but one can assume that this genre played a significant part. This explains why in a chapter of Charlemagne in 789 nuns were forbidden to write down or send such songs.
