Winni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winni is a German male given name , in Denmark and East Friesland also a female given name. It is also occasionally found in the Netherlands, South Africa, and Indonesia, for both men and women. More recently it is often used in a variant with -ie at the end. Sometimes it is converted to surnames, for example in Scandinavian countries, Indonesia and the USA.

Origin and meaning

Winni probably comes from the Germanic language and is best translated as boyfriend / girlfriend . The primitive Germanic and Indo-European meanings correspond to the wish / desire, which is a friend. It is also translated for profit in the sense of joy, will and will. The enormous range of the word stem and the associations suggests that it is very old.

As a male first name, Winni is usually only known as a short form of Winfried in German- speaking countries, which comes from Old High German and is composed of wini (friend) and fried ( peace ). A female form such as Winfrieda or Winifred is also documented. In Celtic-speaking countries it changed to Gwyn or Gwen or Gwendolin . Forms like Wanda and Wendy are, in turn, abbreviations of the English form.
