Winter is a female bottlenose dolphin . After the Japanese Fuji , it is the second dolphin to have a tail fin prosthesis inserted. The films My Friend, the Dolphin (2011) and My Friend, the Dolphin 2 were shot about the audience favorite at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida . Books and a computer game related to the animal have also been published.

Winter was accidentally caught with a safety net by a fisherman off Florida in December 2005 . She was seriously injured in the process. The blood supply to the caudal fin had been cut off, the caudal fin fell off. Winter moved with his side fins first, but had little chance of survival.

The story of the dolphin caught the interest of the American media. The prosthesis manufacturer Kevin Carroll became aware of the animal through the reports and decided to construct a new tail for a dolphin for the first time.
