The Winthirkirche is located in the Winthirfriedhof at Winthirstraße 15 in Munich 's Neuhausen district .

history

The Gothic church was built at the end of the 15th century and is still part of the choir today . In 1597 the grave of the medieval preacher Winthir was integrated into the church. Since then the church has been popularly known as "Winthirkircherl".

Initially the village church belonged to the parish of Sendling . It burned down in 1794 and had to be rebuilt. In 1829 the cemetery had to be expanded and at that time it had already reached its current size.

In 1861 the church was closed due to dilapidation and partially rebuilt by 1872. In 1882 Neuhausen became an independent parish and "Maria Himmelfahrt", as the church was called at that time, became the local church. At this point, however, it was already too small, so that the Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Munich) was built in 1889 .

After the tower collapsed in 1931, the church was reduced in size and rebuilt. It was not officially named "Winthirkirche" until 1970. Today, people who have rendered outstanding services to the state capital Munich are buried there.
