Wippien is a VPN - Client for Windows and Linux . The program creates a VPN connection between two peers (P2P).
Wippien thus makes it possible to set up a virtual LAN between two computers over the Internet in the simplest possible way . The data is compressed and encrypted via AES . It is also possible to exchange messages with the other peer. This is implemented with the XMPP protocol. The source code of the core software is freely accessible and is under the MIT license . However, the VPN and XMPP functionality is provided by a proprietary program library . Wippien can be compared with the OpenVPN and LogMeIn Hamachi software .
Connection establishment
A VPN connection is established for each contact. In order to be able to deal with problems with NAT , Wippien uses an intermediary (mediation server).
When the connection is established, the Wippien client logs on to the mediation server. If two clients are online and know each other (entry in the contact list), the mediation server establishes a connection. When the connection is established, the connection only exists between the two clients.
Mediation server
The developers at Wippien provide a mediation server. But it is also possible to set up and use your own mediation server. The prerequisite for this is a computer that can be reached via the Internet, a web server with PHP support and a MySQL database.
use
Programs can be used via Wippien that would otherwise only run in your own network (LAN). The integration of XMPP means that messages that are subject to TLS encryption can also be transmitted to the other peer.
