The Wirtshaus am Bock is a traditional restaurant in the center of Bergisch Gladbach .

history

The Wirtshaus am Bock is located on Laurentiusstrasse right next to the historic town hall and opposite the Laurentius Church on Bergisch Gladbacher Markt. It is one of the oldest restaurants in the Bergisches Land . Already in the Middle Ages the Bocker Gut was located there , which already housed an inn at that time. A bronze billy goat can be seen above the entrance to the inn, but it is not the name given to it. In front of the Bocker Gut, the Strunde made a sharp arc (Middle High German Boge ), from which the name is derived. This is how the name Bock came about over time . This also explains that the restaurant is called Am Bock and not Zum Bock .

While retaining the old hall, the inn was built in its present form with the construction of the town hall (1905/1906).

As a structural feature, a gate arch with a through bridge above connects the inn with the town hall. There is a sculpture above the archway depicting Mary with the baby Jesus .
