Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits

The Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits ( English Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits , SCOEL) was founded in 1995 by the European Community set up (95/320 / EC). In 2014, the work of the committee was reorganized by Decision 2014/113 / EU of the European Commission . According to this decision, it is the task of the committee to advise the commission on the toxicological assessment of chemicals, to define procedures for deriving limit values ​​for occupational exposure to chemical agents and to make recommendations for limit values.

The derivation of limit values ​​is done using a published methodology and in accordance with Directives 98/24 / EC and 2004/37 / EC. The recommendations can affect biological limits of a chemical substance in the air during an eight-hour exposure (the average concentration English time-weighted average , TWA) or the concentration of a substance in the air during a short-term exposure ( English short-term exposure limit , STEL) Respectively. The recommendations of the committee are the basis of the EU occupational exposure limit values, which are relevant for the national limit value setting in the member states of the European Union .

A maximum of 21 independent scientific experts from the fields of chemistry , toxicology , epidemiology , occupational medicine and industrial hygiene are appointed as members of the committee in accordance with Decision 2014/113 / EU. The members are selected in such a way that the necessary scientific knowledge is covered and a balanced geographical composition of the committee is guaranteed. The members of the committee are appointed for a term of three years. The German toxicologists Helmut Greim , Hermann Bolt and Andrea Hartwig have been members of the committee in recent years.
