Hermann Bolt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Maximilian Bolt (born January 13, 1943 in Kirchen (Sieg) ) is a German toxicologist . From 1997 to 2008 he was director of the Institute for Occupational Physiology in Dortmund .

Live and act

Hermann Bolt studied medicine at the University of Cologne from 1962 to 1967 . He then studied biochemistry from 1968 to 1971 at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He began his scientific career in Herbert Remmer's group in Tübingen. After his habilitation in 1974, Bolt was employed as a university lecturer in Tübingen until 1979. In 1979 Bolt accepted the call to the C3 professorship for toxicology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 1982 he moved to the Institute for Occupational Physiology at the University of Dortmund, where he became Director of the Department of Toxicology and Occupational Medicine. From 1997 until his retirement in 2008 he was director of the Institute for Work Physiology (since January 1, 2009 Leibniz Institute for Work Research at the Technical University of Dortmund).

research

In Tübingen, Bolt conducted research on the metabolism of steroids and, together with toxicologist Hermann Kappus, described the enzyme induction by rifampicin and the influence on the breakdown of estradiol and ethinylestradiol . Due to the accelerated breakdown of ethinylestradiol, oral contraceptives lose their effectiveness and this can lead to unwanted pregnancies during rifampicin therapy.

Later the research focus switched to the metabolism of industrial chemicals ( vinyl chloride , 1,3-butadiene , n- hexane and others) and the toxicological importance of the metabolites, for example for tumor development.

Together with Brian Ketterer's group, Bolt and his group clarified the deletion polymorphism of glutathione-S-transferase T1. As a result, Bolt and his working group examined the occupational medical significance of this deletion polymorphism more closely.

Other activities

Hermann Bolt has been a member of the MAK Commission since 1979 and a member of the Scientific Committee for Limit Values for Occupational Exposure (SCOEL) of the EU since 1996 . He is Associate Editor of the Archives of Toxicology .

Bolt was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Research Association for Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT).

Awards

On February 8, 2000, Bolt was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class . Previously, he had already been awarded the Felix Haffner Prize for Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Tübingen and the Marius Tausk Prize from the German Society for Endocrinology. In recognition of his services in the field of occupational medicine, Bolt was awarded the Franz Koelsch Medal in 2018 .
