The Scientific Center for Civil Protection was located in the building in the Treptow district of Bohnsdorf in Berlin from the 1970s to 1989 . It was subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior (MdI). The MdI's “ radiological workshop” was also located there .

tasks

The Scientific Center of Civil Defense had the following tasks:

  • Research of:
  • Training of laboratory managers in the districts regarding the dangers of chemical warfare agents
  • Research into questions of security of supply in the event of a defense

Radiation measuring devices were maintained and calibrated in the radiological workshop.

Warfare agents used

As part of the research, the following warfare agents were experimented with:

Up until July 6, 1990, there were around 660 g of sarin, 523 g of soman and 124 g of VX warfare agents in a special room. These warfare agents were removed that day and then destroyed.

Further use of the object

Until October 3, 1990, the day of German reunification, the film and image office of the Ministry of the Interior was located at Dahmestrasse 33 .

On January 17, 1997 the socio-cultural center “Kulturküche Bohnsdorf” was inaugurated there. The district library, the Kiezklub Bohnsdorf and the Treptow-Köpenick civil engineering department are also located on the site.
