Science award: Society needs science

The Science Prize: Society Needs Science , is awarded every two years at the suggestion of the Leibniz Association by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft for outstanding research achievements with particular social relevance and good feasibility. It is endowed with 50,000 euros and is awarded at the annual meeting of the Leibniz Association.

Award winners

  • 2018 Thomas J. Jentsch from the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology for the elucidation of several genetic diseases. Macartan Humphreys from the Berlin Science Center for Social Research for new approaches in international development cooperation.
  • 2016 Christian Hartmann and his project team at the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin for the historical-critical edition of Hitler's Mein Kampf . Cesar Muñoz-Fontela (Heinrich Pette Institute) for research into a more effective Ebola therapy.
  • 2014 Christoph Lange (Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Center for Medicine and Biosciences, FBZ) for the fight against highly antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis pathogens.
  • 2012 Lenhard Rudolph (Leibniz Institute for Aging Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute, FLI) for research on the molecular cause of aging.
  • 2010 Eckhard Klieme (German Institute for International Educational Research) for educational research.
  • 2008 Günther Rüdiger (Astrophysical Institute Potsdam), Frank Stefani (Research Center Dresden-Rossendorf) for the first experimental proof of magneto-rotation instability.
  • 2006 Bernhard Holzapfel , Ludwig Schultz (Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research in Dresden) for research on high-temperature superconductors.
  • 2004 Carl Böhret as the founder of research on regulatory impact assessment .
  • 2003 Anna Wobus for advances in the treatment of diabetes with stem cells.
  • 2002 Eberhard Fuchs for research on traces of stress in the brain and the clarification of the mode of action of common drugs against depression.
