The Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw (Polish: Centrum Nauki Kopernik ) is a building complex on the western bank of the Vistula , dedicated to the promotion of knowledge. It is named after Nicolaus Copernicus . Visitors can independently carry out experiments that explain the basic laws of science. The center is a joint project of the capital Warsaw, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of National Education.

history

The initiative to establish the center came from Łukasz Turski , a professor of theoretical physics at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. In December 2005, the project of the architectural team “RAr-2 Laboratorium Architektury” Gilner + Kubec was selected in the competition. In November of the following year, the projects for two museum areas (“The world in motion” and “People and the environment”) from a consortium of two Dutch companies (Bruns and NorthernLight) were accepted in another call for tenders. In further tenders, the Hüttinger company won the orders for the exhibitions “The Roots of Civilization” and “The Zones of Light”.

Construction work began in July 2008. The building stands on the banks of the Vistula near the city center. It was built on the ceiling of a modern road tunnel not far from the university library and the “Centrum Nauki Kopernik” subway station.

The main building was inaugurated in November 2010. In 2011 the ECSITE ( European Network of Science Centers and Museums ) conference took place in the center .
