Career

Withold Wiechowski was a son of Wilhelm Friedrich Wiechowski . He studied mechanical and electrical engineering at the Prague German Technical University. From the end of 1932 to 1937 he was a research assistant with Friedrich Niethammer at the Electrotechnical Institute. In 1934 he received his doctorate in engineering. with a thesis on DC machines for electric arc welding . In 1938 he was Siegel's research assistant. After the Institute for General and Theoretical Electrical Engineering was founded for Eugen Flegler in 1939 , he first became an assistant and then a senior engineer.

In 1940 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on attenuation calculations for transmitting antennas and became a lecturer in theoretical electrical engineering the following year. From 1945 to 1956 he was in Soviet captivity. He then took up a position again as a research assistant with Flegler at the Rogowski Institute of RWTH Aachen University . On July 23, 1957 he was appointed private lecturer for general and theoretical electrical engineering, in December 1957 lecturer, on August 12, 1961 as associate professor and on December 10, 1961 to the scientific council. His work focused on electrical measurement technology and lighting technology.

He resigned on April 12, 1964 and followed a call to the newly founded Ruhr University Bochum , built up the electrical engineering department and became its first dean. In 1970 he brought Paul Wenzel to his chair.

He worked in the German Standards Committee, especially in the Committee for Units and Formula Quantities (AEF).

Wiechowski died in 1971 and found his final resting place in the Aachen forest cemetery .
