Witmarsum is a city in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina . It is located about 110 km from the Atlantic coast not far from the city of Blumenau .
The city was founded in 1924 by three German immigrants (Paul Zerna, August Langhorst and Helmuth Teosowski) from the former German colonies of Africa and was therefore initially named Nova África .
In 1930, many Germans of Mennonite faith from Russia and the Ukraine moved to the colony. In honor of the Anabaptist leader Menno Simons , they renamed the colony after his Frisian birthplace Witmarsum .
After the colony received the status of a district in 1954, it was named a city on June 15, 1962.
The city now earns around two thirds of its income from the production of agricultural products (especially milk, molasses from sugar cane, wine and pork).
