Wladimir Borissowitsch Soskijew (also Vladimir Soskiev , Russian Владимир Борисович Соскиев ; born January 14, 1941 in Surch-Digora ( Сурх-Дигора ), North Ossetia-Alania ) is a Russian artist and sculptor.

Life

After attending school, Vladimir Soskijew studied from 1959 at the Art Institute in Ordzhonikidze , the capital of the North Ossetian ASSR . Between 1967 and 1973 further training followed at the Moscow Surikov Institute of Fine Arts . From the 1970s, Vladimir Soskijew took part in various national and international sculpture exhibitions in Moscow, Riga, Germany, Japan, Hungary, France and Italy and won various prizes for his sculptures, including the 1981 “Best Works of the Year” award Artists Union of the USSR . In 1989 he exhibited for the first time alone in the Central House of the Artist (ZDCh) in Moscow. Eight years later, in 1997, his works were shown in the spring exhibition of Moscow artists in the Tretyakov Gallery .

Art and collections

Soskyev regards the ancient Ossetian traditions and his destiny as the main sources of inspiration for his works. The Caucasus dominates in each of his works . At the end of the 20th century, Vladimir Soskijew created memorials to the victims of World War II and the Chechen Wars as well as funerary monuments in Russia and in the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois near Paris .

From 1973 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union Soskijew was a member of the Artists' Union of the USSR. He has been a member of the Russian Academy of Arts since 2007 and was awarded the title “People's Artist of the Republic of North Ossetia” in 2009.
