Where the dog is buried ( Czech Kde je zakopán pes ) is an autobiographical novel by the Czech-Austrian writer Pavel Kohout .

The novel describes the experiences of the author and his wife Jelena Mašínová in Czechoslovakia at the time of the so-called normalization after the Prague Spring up to their expulsion in 1979. The plot is embedded in a criminal case initiated by the Czech secret service, the extortion of Jelena Mašínová . It culminates dramatically in the eponymous assassination attempt on the couple's dachshund.

The description of the origin of Charter 77 is of historical interest . In this context, haunting descriptions of everyday life under a socialist dictatorship and the fate of persecution of leading Czech dissidents such as Václav Havel , Pavel Landovský , Ivan Klíma , Ludvík Vaculík and Jan Patočka emerge .
