Woburn Abbey (Woburna), a former monastery of Cistercian is a noble residence approximately 1.5 km southeast of Woburn in Bedfordshire in England .
history
The monastery was founded in 1145 by Hugh de Bolebec as a daughter monastery of Fountains Abbey and thus belonged to the Filiation of Clairvaux . From Woburn Abbey, the subsidiary Medmenham Abbey was founded in 1204 . However, the monastery ran into financial difficulties in the following years, but regained its prosperity around 1280. In the Valor Ecclesiasticus of 1535, the annual income was estimated at 391 pounds. The dissolution, in which the last abbot Robert Hobbes and two monks were executed, took place in 1538. Subsequently, Lord Russell of Chenies, who later became the Earl of Bedford, received the monastery. The castle is still the seat of the Duke of Bedford today and houses a safari park. It is a member of the Treasure Houses of England consortium .
Buildings and plant
Nothing has been preserved from the monastery buildings. The castle built by the fourth Earl of Bedford stands on the monastery grounds, the north wing of which was built around 1630 on the north wing of the monastery complex. The west wing was built under John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford , between 1747 and 1761 by Henry Flintcroft and the south wing under Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford , between 1787 and 1790 by Henry Holland . The east wing, also built by Holland, was demolished around 1950 due to its structural condition. The enclosure of the monastery is likely to have been around today's castle courtyard.
