history

The Lehe district in the Prussian Wesermünde grew steadily. In 1917 there were 31,653 residents in Lehe, in 1924 there were already 41,000. After the First World War , the rental apartments were mainly financed by non-profit building associations and cooperatives with state subsidies (interest reductions).

The four- to five-storey, brick-built residential complex with 122 apartments was built in 1929/30 in the modernist style of the 1920s by the non-profit building association Geestemünde . The four wings are grouped around a rectangular, closed inner courtyard.
The State Office for Monument Protection stated: “In the area of social housing, the work block is the only successful example of the so-called" new building "of the 1920s in the state of Bremen ... the special features of this style such as the complete renunciation of ornament, the design of the floors and the sharp, cubic closure of the building corners and the flat roof were implemented without compromise. ”
Due to structural defects, some facades on the north and west sides and in the inner courtyard had to be plastered in 1932 become. In the 1930s, several large apartments were divided into two-room apartments as required. In 1965 there was a single-storey store expansion for consumption in an easterly direction.

Further well-designed rental housing complexes in the modernist style of the 1920s are available in Bremerhaven u. a. in the area of Bürgermeister-Smidt-Strasse 187 to 193 and Fritz-Reuter-Strasse 42 to 61.
